Ticks and fleas – Oh, My!  Just the thought is enough to send shivers down your spine!

Did you know that there are over 2,200 different types of fleas, and that ticks can live for more than a year without feeding on an animal? These pesky little critters usually hang out in tall grasses and low shrubs, ready and eager for your unsuspecting pup to run through – but if you have a pet, there’s also the possibility that there may be dormant pupae in your home this winter, just waiting to hatch.  When the bugs bite your dog, they inject saliva into the pet’s skin, causing flea allergy dermatitis, anemia, tapeworm transmission, or worse. With ticks, there are over 15 serious diseases that can be transmitted, including: Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, ehrlichiosis, and more.

Because there are many differing opinions and options when shopping for products that prevent or treat for ticks and fleas, we recommend that you consult your preferred veterinarian. It’s very important to follow prescribed directions closely and consistently for best results.

At Club Pooche, we suggest:

  • In advance of flea season, buy a flea comb and regularly groom your dog, dropping any fleas and eggs into very hot, soapy water.
  • When working through a flea infestation, you will want to wash household clothing, linens, and throw rugs in hot soapy water.
  • When you vacuum, be sure to place mothballs in your vacuum cleaner bags. Otherwise, fleas can continue to live in these bags. When you dispose of the bag, make sure that it is sealed completely and placed in a plastic bag, outdoors.
  • Be sure to vacuum wooden floors regularly too. Fleas, eggs, and larvae love to get down in between the boards.
  • If you find a tick on your dog, remove it, place it in alcohol then take it to your veterinarian so that it can be tested for Lyme – your vet will advise you on the proper treatment for your pet.

An important consideration for dogs in our care at Club Pooche is that owners maintain topical flea & tick control (Frontline, Advantage or Revolution) with their canine. Resident dogs are regularly screened, and our professional team works hard to maintain cleanliness to prevent any possible infestations.  It’s important to be proactive, in order to prevent problems.
